The Galloway Viking Hoard

Can this wikidata category on the Commons page be changed please? The Viking Hoard was found in Galloway in the county of Kirkcudbrightshire to be precise and is nowhere near Dumfriesshire. These sort of errors are a great source of irritation to those of us who live in Galloway and shouldn't occur on Wikipedia which plays great emphasis on accuracy and verification. The Galloway Hoard is the accepted name and there are numerous references on Wikipedia itself and most notably The National Museum of Scotland (NMS) in Edinburgh where the Hoard now is held. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamie Stuart 11 (talk • contribs) 17:30, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

@Musicky: Hello, you are now on Wikimedia Commons, the free media depository of the Wikimedia Movement. What is your problem about editing Commons?廣九直通車 (talk) 10:31, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
  • @Musicky: Signing your posts on talk pages is required by Commons:Signatures policy. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion).

@Jeff G.: I do have a poem that I have written for her. That I can show you, but her image I will keep. Musicky (talk) 12:30, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: For Grace/

When I’m next to you, I’ve felt
Icy cold defenses melt.
And I’ve seen you also grow;
Bouncing my heart to and fro.

All the challenges we face
Are nothing next to our embrace.
Demons claw and rake my soul
But when with you, I feel whole.

I mean it when I say to you
“It’s thanks to you that I’ve pulled through,”
And I know deep in my heart
That even death won’t make us part.

Attribution to images

I would like to use some of the images and note it states "You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made." Where it says you must give appropriate credit, do I just include the image owner's name? And how to I provide a link to the licence? I'm unable to find how to do that. Martinajorden (talk) 21:35, 24 February 2019 (UTC)

Martinajorden: I'll use a random file as an example, File:Westward Parish Room - geograph.org.uk - 104895.jpg. Looking at the information under the Licensing heading, we see that the license is "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic". The second half of that is a link to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/deed.en. That would be a reasonable link to provide, as would a link to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/legalcode. As for appropriate credit, that's stated after "Attribution:", namely "Bob Jenkins". If that's not present, just use what's in the "Author" field above.
If you name the files you have in mind, we can provide more specific advice. LX (talk, contribs) 22:18, 24 February 2019 (UTC)

Thank you. So for example if I want to use an image in my blog would I: Select the image I was interested in Go to "Use this File" and copy the File URL Go to where I want to download the image and enter the FILE URL to download the image. Then go to Attribution Generator, answer the questions and then copy the generated licence notice and insert this under the image? Is that how I would provide a link to the licence? Do I copy and paste and then insert it under the image for everyone to see?

For example I would like to use this image - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A_storm_at_Pors-Loubous.jpg. Under the image would I include the following licence notice - Henri Camus, A storm at Pors-Loubous, CC BY 1.0 This is the licence notice I got from Attribution Generator.

My apologies if you see these messages twice. It's the first time I've posted question and I didn't realise I had to do signature each time. Martinajorden (talk) 08:25, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

Martinajorden: Yes, that sounds fine. There needs to be a link to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/1.0/, but I believe that's taken care of if you use the "Use this File" option. LX (talk, contribs) 14:46, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

Exempel image WIKI (Castrup [CC BY-SA 3.0], via Wikimedia Commons)
Martinajorden, see COM:REUSE. With the default skin setting you should actually see a reuse assistance bar above or right of the file preview, cf. Reuse assistance tools. Click on “Use this file” with the globe symbol on the left (this is for external usage). Presuming you need HTML code on your blog you should enable HTML (alas, otherwise only BB Code is possible), and you should set an image size, then you should get this (1024px here):
<a title="Henri Camus [CC BY 1.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/1.0)], via Wikimedia Commons" href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A_storm_at_Pors-Loubous.jpg"><img width="1024" alt="A storm at Pors-Loubous" src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/88/A_storm_at_Pors-Loubous.jpg/1024px-A_storm_at_Pors-Loubous.jpg"></a>
Note that this has important information only in the title attribute of the link which is behind the image, the actual file name without file extension is used as alternative info (alt attribute). I think it would be better to add this title attribute as (part of) a caption, too. We cannot imitate this perfectly here, because we can images embed only with wiki syntax, but it should nonetheless look similar like with the example image (256px used).
Another tip, save this as bookmark: Lizenzhinweisgenerator (available in German as default, English, Spanish and Portuguese).
— Speravir – 01:19, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
Oh, the latter has in COM:REUSE a short section, as well, as Attribution Generator. — Speravir – 01:23, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

Watchlist too big to edit or clear

"69,119 pages are on your Watchlist (plus talk pages)". I never look at it & want to clear it completely, or in stages by editing. But either operation times out. What to do? Johnbod (talk) 22:16, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

@Johnbod: there's an option to entirely clear your watchlist in the preferences: Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-watchlist (direct link: Special:EditWatchlist/clear). I haven't tried it myself, but I imagine it would avoid the timeout issues you've experienced. Alternately, Special:EditWatchlist/raw loads faster for me than Special:EditWatchlist, so that could be an option. clpo13(talk) 22:26, 28 February 2019 (UTC)
The first of these is exactly the one that times out. The "raw" one does let me edit the list though, so thanks for that. Tedious work though. Johnbod (talk) 02:50, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

It has to be free enough for us. Please read COM:L and follow COM:FS.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:23, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
The short version: most of what you find on the Internet is copyrighted, with all rights reserved. Usually, if you want a picture of a living person that is free enough for use here, the choices are:
  • Take the picture yourself and upload it.
  • Persuade someone already interested in creating free content (e.g. another participant in this project) who has better access to the person in question to take the picture and upload it.
  • Find an appropriately free-licensed picture that someone already posted online somewhere else, but here you have to make sure that the person who says they grant a license really owned the rights they are licensing.
  • Contact the person whose photo you want, or an institution that they are connected with, and (typically) get them to have a photographer who has taken a photo of them go through the COM:OTRS process (or, if they've purchased the copyright of that photo, then they can do that process themselves).
There are a few other ways through the maze, but those are by far the most likely. - Jmabel ! talk 02:00, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Help needed related to photographs of "National War Memorial (India)"

I am trying to sort out the images on the Wikipedia page for the National War Memorial (India) as well as the images in the commons category for the same "Category:National War Memorial (India)".

I have already nominated three images for speedy delete because I don't think they meet the copyright/permission requirements. I have a problem with images also uploaded by user User:Sankoswal such as "File:The National War Memorial (राष्ट्रीय समर स्मारक), New Delhi, India.jpg" because at the entrance to the memorial premises it clearly says on a signboard titled "Guidelines for the visitors" ... "Photography for personal use only".

So just going by this information... can personal photographs of the National War Memorial be used on commons when the monument guidelines say photography only for personal use? Commons isn't personal use right? I myself wanted to upload images of the memorial which I took today and wanted to clarify how to go about this before proceeding. Thank you. DiplomatTesterMan (talk) 14:16, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

User:Sarvatra, I see you have been involved with this to a certain extent and have currently nominated some National War Memorial pictures for deletion here ...Commons:Deletion requests/File:PMO.jpg. Please could you comment on this doubt which I have if possible and how to go about it? DiplomatTesterMan (talk) 14:59, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

@Stevesmith372: Nothing we do here at Commons can control what picture of you the English-language Wikipedia chooses to use. What you can do is to upload (or have someone upload) what you consider to be a better picture of you, put that in commons:Category:Steve Smith (house music vocalist), and ask at en:Talk:Steve Smith (house music vocalist) to have it replaced on the page. Please remember: we (Commons) need permission from the rights-holder, so if the picture is not a selfie then either the photographer should create an account (if they don't already have one) and upload from that, go through the COM:OTRS process; or post the picture on a web page that is identifiably under their control (e.g. a personal web site, a Flickr account, etc.) with a clear indication of the intended free license, and then you can upload citing that page as a source. - Jmabel ! talk 17:58, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

@Felicia777: Thank you for your inquiry. You may want to use Move-to-commons assistant to assist with your work:
  • Please choose the correct language code (default is English Wikipedia), then input the original file name (without the "File:" prefix).
  • Should you want to change the file's name, you may also do it, also omitting the "File:" prefix.
  • Next, please click on the "OAuth uploader" link and allow OAuth uploader to upload the file on behalf of your account. Click "Get text", and you would get your file automatically transferred.
  • You should then click "Add NowCommons", and confirm adding the template.
  • You may also click "Your new file should be here!" and done with categorization and cleanup. This is best done by opening a new sub-page on your Internet browser.

Regarding your file, I found it was already uploaded to Commons, and I have helped you dealing with the file. Should you have any inquires, please feel free to ask me, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 03:48, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Kandinsky "Thirty"

I design clothing (in the US) with public domain images. I've found a super image file of Kandinsky's "Thirty" at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trente_Kandinsky_1937.jpg that I'd like to use. The image is identified as public domain: "The author died in 1944, so this work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or less." However, my own research tells me that this was painted in 1937, and that therefore it won't be released into the public domain until 95 years after that date, or 2032.

Can you help me clear up this confusion? Many, many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gaiagang (talk • contribs) 17:24, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

@Gaiagang: the image is missing a US copyright tag, so there may indeed be a problem. ISTM the deciding factor would be whether or not it was registered in the USA at the time of publication, and whether or not that registration was later renewed as required, because the 70-apma term had not expired by the URAA cutoff date of 1995. (According to COM:HIRTLE the 95-year term does not apply to works which failed to meet those requirements.) I suggest posting at COM:VPC; some of the users who monitor that board are (unlike me) quite good at searching the relevant records.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:15, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Permission to upload a photo from a publisher

I have been sent the cover photo of Jools Holland from Railway Modeller to be uploaded into Wikimedia Commons. I had added some information about Jools Holland's train hobby to his Wikipedia page and thought a photo would add to the page so, not expecting a reply, sent an email to the magazine requesting them to upload one or some photos to Wikimedia Commons with an attached link. I was surprised to quickly receive a reply with an attached photo of the cover with Jools Holland and his train set. However, I am not the owner of this photo but have obviously been given permission to upload it. Is this enough for me to be allowed to upload and use the photo in Wikipedia? Or do I need to seek further permissions? Thanks!

With the best will in the world, I'm not sure that will be an adequate release of the image, because it may not be a free enough licence for our purposes. images uploaded here need to be either free of copyright or uploaded with a licence that permits redistribution, amendment and attribution, and not all thos elements are clear from that email. The magazine needs to understand what they are permitting, per COM:LICENSING. In any event, with no criticism of you, they may not even own the copyright of the image- it's a complex situation that they should be aware of. In any event, I'd ask them to look at OTRS and follow the process there. Meanwhile, it may be that you can upload the image to Wikipedia using fair use pending the OTRS request, which sadly, may take some time as we are short of volunteers. Adding a photo to Wikimedia commons

I am communications officer at a university, attempting to upload a headshot of a professor. It is probably most accurate for me to say that I'm NOT the owner/creator of the photo, although I took it, but that it is owned by the university's communications department. I do not understand how to go about doing this in the most painless way possible. Help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kgberg (talk • contribs) 18:50, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

@Kgberg: you say you are not the creator, yet you did take the picture. Something does not add up here. --HyperGaruda (talk) 20:16, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Maybe I am! I'll check with dept. Perhaps this is a non issue (one hopes) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kgberg (talk • contribs) 20:21, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

@Kgberg: the rules regarding assumed copyright of works created in the course of one’s employment, and of works for hire, vary from country to country. If you took the picture, you are the author or creator regardless, but the intellectual property in it might indeed belong to the university according to your terms of employment or under law. If this is the case, the university should send permission from its office address to OTRS. (As communications officer you might have authorization to do so on the organization’s behalf anyway, but it’s certainly worth checking with your HR or IP authorities.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:07, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: Thanks so much. I'll check with our department. By what channel should the the permission be sent to OTRS? Talk, or email? Thanks again — Kgberg (talk) 13:55, 28 February 2019 (UTC)Kgberg
Please read COM:OTRS. It's quite specific about what they need. Permission should come in email, but the content they need is rather specific. - Jmabel ! talk 22:15, 28 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks very much. I'll review that and proceed.Kgberg (talk) 15:31, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

Cómo solicitar la eliminación de una foto. How to request the deletion of a picture

Queridxs amigxs del Help desk, Dear Help desk friends,

a petición de Maru Valdivielso, querríamos solicitar que se elimine la página https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archivo:Maru_Valdivieso.jpg. At the request of Maru Valdivielso, we would like to request that the page https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archivo:Maru_Valdivieso.jpg be deleted.

Dicha foto fue generada sin permiso a través de un vídeo de youtube y se ha convertido en la foto de portada cada vez que se escribe el texto "Maru Valdivielso" en ciertos buscadores. This photo was generated without permission, stemming from a Youtube video, and has become the cover photo every time the text "Maru Valdivielso" is written in certain search engines.

Por lo que hemos entendido, para solicitar el borrado rápido se debe insertar el siguiente texto en la página anterior: From what we have understood, to request fast deletion the following text must be inserted in the previous page:

{{subst:Aviso destruir|Nombre del artículo|Criterios de borrado rápido}} {{subst: Warning destroy | Item name | Quick delete criteria}}

Los criterios pueden ser, "Bulos, fraudes", o "Violaciones de derechos de autor". The criteria can be, "unfounded rumour, frauds," or "Copyright violations."

¿Por favor, nos podríais confirmar que ésta es la forma de solicitar su eliminación?. Es caso negativo, ¿Nos podríais explicar el mecanismo para borrarla? Could you please confirm that this is the way to request its elimination? In case it is not, could you explain the proper mechanism to erase it?

Muchas gracias por vuestra ayuda. Thank you very much for your help.

Un afectuoso saludo. Kind regards.

News on 03-03-2019 A breakaway female cyclist was forced to stop during a prestigious race in Belgium

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicole_Hanselmann

I made an edit on the above page, added news about the last race in Belgium. But now everything is gone, as if I have done nothing.

How does it work exactly ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oceans Blue (talk • contribs)

It's a Wikipedia article and perhaps you should ask the editor who removed your additions there, but it looks like you copied and pasted a huge block of text into the article. That's plagiarism and is a breach of copyright. A short precis citing the full source would have been acceptable. Rodhullandemu (talk) 11:30, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

We are publishing a book and including photos of GNU Free Documentation License. I think we do not need to contact the author, but simply credit the author. Are a link of the license and changes made needed? I am not sure "Courtesy of XXX" is a reasonable manner. Thanks.

Note that where a file has multiple licences, you need only comply with at least one of them. (GFDL alone is not very common here, and is now deprecated on new uploads, mainly because it’s so cumbersome to use ‘offline’.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:45, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

Have an original photo of a Robinson's store chain from 1960s I'd like to upload

I have a photo of a Robinson's store chain in California from the 1960s from my deceased Grandfather's slide collection. There doesn't seem to be any images that I could find of the Robinson's chain in California from back in the day, so I thought it'd be neat to share it. Can't figure out how to upload it, the upload process keeps giving me an error when I try to upload it which tells me that I need to have the rights to upload this photo. Just want to contribute something to one of my favorite websites! Any help would be greatly appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seibertron (talk • contribs) 22:33, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

@Seibertron: assuming your grandfather took the photo, are you his heir or authorized to act on behalf of his estate? If so, we have ways of indicating that, but they may not be options the upload form offers. If not, we would need permission from someone who is (submitted confidentially through OTRS). Under what licence did you want to donate the photo? This being a wiki, it is acceptable to ‘tell a white lie’ (e.g. that you took the picture) in order to satisfy the wizard, as long as you edit the file page immediately after uploading to correct it.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:41, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

Hey Марина Павликовская. What is the specific error message you receive when trying to upload the photo? GMGtalk 18:08, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

When I try to add a new photo on my fathers wiki page (https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Опойцев,_Валерий_Иванович) wiki says "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons."

I also can't find a way to answer help desk comments. I had to make a new request. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Марина Павликовская (talk • contribs) 18:21, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

I really don't know how to look up what's triggering this, and the error message isn't very helpful. Can you link to the file that you're trying to upload online? Can you send it to me via email so I can try to replicate the error? GMGtalk 23:41, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
@Марина Павликовская: My guess is that you are trying to upload a small image via an interwiki upload, from an account that hasn't done a lot here. Usually those turn out to be images someone just grabbed off the Internet that they shouldn't be uploading, and the tools are perhaps being overcautious.
Try uploading directly to Commons (e.g. with Special:UploadWizard). And please provide the highest-resolution version of the image that is available. Thanks. - Jmabel ! talk 01:00, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

The image showing as the Coat of Arms for the Archdiocese of San Francisco is not our coat of arms. Someone just drew that, apparently, and it is not in our control, but has never been our coat of arms. We feel it is something of a mockery of our official shield, and would like to correct that.

I can provide the official version. However, we are not willing to grant permission for others to modify it.

Any help is appreciated. May we provide the official coat of arms? If so, how do I do that?

@Catfishy1968: if you are not prepared to allow modification, the logo cannot be hosted here. Assuming you are talking about its appearance in an English Wikipedia article, if you upload the image onto that project as non-free content it can be used there. (Coats of arms may be depicted in any style, conforming to the conventions of heraldry as long as the blazon—the verbal description—is followed. But the result might not be considered suitable to represent the owner; compare the illustration for the en:Arms of Canada article, which shows a drawing of the official emblazonment under a fair-use rationale, with our free version at File:Coat of arms of Canada rendition.svg.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:52, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
To be clear, I was planning on uploading the file locally on en.wiki under a claim of fair use. I just need a file to upload. GMGtalk 22:06, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

I do have the new file but don't want to upload it here because I am releasing rights (it says).

Yes, I see it on the Wikipedia article, and if I click the image there it shows other pages that pull the same image. Some of those are for our employees (Cardinal Levada, Archbishop Cordileone, etc.). So I guess that's where I need to upload it but I cannot tell how to do that. Catfishy1968 (talk) 22:12, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Catfishy1968, send me an email here and I'll reply back so you can send me the file you have. I'll get it uploaded correctly so it won't be deleted, and we can use it under a claim of fair use, so you won't be giving up any rights to the image. GMGtalk 22:25, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Exif data with geolocation

As a OTRS-volunteer I am handling permission tickets for photo's. Sometimes the photo includes Exif data with the location. I think photographers, especially amateurs, are not aware that by giving permission they will also publish the location or even the home of the subject. There is even a bot on Commons, User:DschwenBot, which makes this information even more open and accessible to anyone, see for instance this edit. I have two questions:

  1. How can I remove these exif data prior to uploading, in order to protect the privacy of the photographer and his/her subject
  2. Was this privacy issue ever discussed on Commons? Where can I find it?

Kind regards, Elly (talk) 11:08, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

There's a good EXIF editor here: [5]. I don't know of any discussion on this point, but I would think it wise to remove geolocation as "personal data" for images taken on private premises, particularly homes. Rodhullandemu (talk) 11:27, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
  • I saw a discussion like this somewhere but I can't remember the venue, maybe it was on one of our mailing lists or something. But it might be necessary to ask the licensor if they are aware of the exif issue before removal and or publication so as to not leave them with an impression that their works were doctored without their consent. About my videos and images

My videos and images are in the Whattasp , how can upload it? How will know what my videos and images has a prize ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Enemchukwu Edeh (talk • contribs) 05:21, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

@Enemchukwu Edeh: Thank you for your query. For all files hosted on Wikimedia Commons, they must be licensed under a free license, which means the file can be reused non-commercially and commercially, and derivative works could be created legally. Besides, they must also hold an educational value. For images from WhatsApp, my concern is that:
  • Firstly, the files may be created by others, which you would need a permission email from the original creator. Files without proper source information would be nominated for deletion.
  • Secondly, it is worried that files from WhatsApp might not have sufficient educational value, as such files are usually personal images.

Therefore, you are advised to read COM:L and COM:PSS carefully, and determine whether you should upload the files or not. Regarding "How will know what my videos and images has a prize?", Wikimedia Commons have a series of photography competition, such as Featured Pictures, Quality Images and Valued Images, and I am not sure what "prize" you are talking. Should you have any queries for whether your images or videos may qualify for any prizes, please leave a message on COM:CRIT. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask me, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 12:29, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

@Enemchukwu Edeh: by the way, please also use ~~~~ to sign your comments, in order for others to differentiate different comments.廣九直通車 (talk) 12:31, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
Also, if you are posting first to WhatsApp and only later to Commons, it is important that you make it clear that you are the same person on both accounts. I don't know WhatsApp well enough to know how best to do that there, but if nothing else you can always fall back to using COM:OTRS for this purpose. - Jmabel ! talk 16:31, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
Enemchukwu Edeh; You can upload the videos and photos here if they were entirely created by you and you agree to release them under a free license. However, you are probably talking about COM:Wiki Loves Africa 2019. Correct? You will be eligible to win a prize (local or international) if the works are entirely yours and got nominated as one of the best three photos of the contest. Regards. A picture I uploaded is not showing up in selected categories

I uploaded a picture to Commons from an iOS app and selected several categories to add my picture to. After it had uploaded I clicked on the category links and my picture was in some categories but not in others. Why is this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThePickeringtonian (talk • contribs) 16:58, 7 March 2019 (UTC) -ThePickeringtonian — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThePickeringtonian (talk • contribs) 16:59, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Yes that’s the one. It’s now in all the categories. Yesterday a bit added == Summary == is this important? Is it why my picture didn’t appear in some categories? ThePickeringtonian (talk) 16:03, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

@ThePickeringtonian: unlikely; that just makes the heading appear in a user’s preferred language. If you had visited the category pages prior to uploading the file, your browser might have still been displaying the old versions from its cache afterward. It’s also possible that the servers got behind, although IME categorization edits take effect more-or-less immediately.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:43, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

Picture

The picture I want to put in my Wikipedia article is already used in the internet, BUT, it's a picture of the last piece of MY dance company, taken by the photographer I hired. How do I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by François Veyrunes (talk • contribs) 17:11, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Hey François Veyrunes. You will need to provide verification that you own the image, and release the images under a free license according to instructions at COM:CONSENT. GMGtalk 21:29, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
François Veyrunes is there a written agreement between your company and the photographer that these works may be released under a free license? You may not release their works under a free license here without a written permission from them. Will you consider to contact the photographer for permission? If they agree to release it under a free license, you can send evidence of permission to our support team using this email template. Regards. Louis-Luc Beaudoin page

Bonjour,

  • I have no idea how to say this in French, but: this is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. Commons only hosts images that are either free-licensed or public domain. This is neither, so if you want this photo hosted on Commons, we'd need a free license, such as {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}}, and because the photo is already published elsewhere, we'd need a release, as described in COM:OTRS/fr.
  • I see that you received permission specific to Wikipedia (pour utiliser cette photo pour Wikipedia), which is of course not the same as a free license. If there is an article on him in the English-language Wikipedia, it may be possible to use this in the under their non-free use policies, but I suspect not because they don't usually allow non-free images of living people. For the French-language Wikipedia, it would appear that they would not allow this—fr:Wikipédia:Exceptions au droit d'auteur— but it might be a little different given explicit permission for use in Wikipedia.
  • But independent of anything about the photo: I see that fr:Louis-Luc Beaudoin was deleted for lack of cited sources. Until you get that sorted out, anything about use of a non-free photo is moot. - Jmabel ! talk 06:06, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

  1. @Pugliesig: There was no license template, so a bot can't know it is licensed. "CC BY-SA 4.0" doesn't work, you need {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}}.
  2. The source link, at least for File:Vito Bongiorno 02.jpg, led to a dead page, https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10204973529436747&set=a.1422190793573&type=3&theater .
  3. Was permission given via COM:OTRS or in some other manner? I see no evidence of permission. - Jmabel ! talk 16:41, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

I mean works of Czech government are protected except legal regulation, decision, public charter, publicly accessible register and collection of its documents, and also any official draft of an official work and other preparatory official documentation including the official translation of such work, Chamber of Deputies and Senate publications, a memorial chronicle of a municipality (municipal chronicles), a state symbol and symbol of a municipality, and any other such works where there is public interest.

How the upload own photo on wikipedia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nilesh aaryan (talk • contribs) 20:35, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Are you asking about uploading specifically to Wikipedia (in which case which language? Not all accept images at all) or to Commons (the site you are asking on)?
  • When you say "own photo", do you mean a photo of yourself, or just a photo you took? If it's a photo of yourself, keep in mind that copyright normally belongs to the photographer, not the subject of the photo, so unless it is a self-portrait, you are not usually in a position to grant a license for a photo of yourself.
  • As to how to upload a photo to Commons: if you are new to this, usually the easiest way is to start from Special:UploadWizard and follow the directions there. - Jmabel ! talk 21:48, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

Inclusion of my pictures or files in the category of "Wiki Loves Africa 2019 in Tanzania."

To whom it may concern,

I feel very disappointed since yesterday (11/03/2019), I have been trying to upload my pictures for sharing in Wiki Loves Africa 2019 but after completion of uploading I tried to find the uploaded pictures if they exist in the list of the country (Tanzania) where I reside as the citizen, stunningly they never appear therein! But whenever I log in to my account and click on the "Uploads" the pictures are well displayed! To that end, what went wrong in the uploading process? Will the selection committee see my shared pictures if they are not included in my country's category really? If not, what should be done to set everything correctly?

Your early action will be greatly appreciated since the deadline is approaching very quickly!

@Thanks in advance for the consideration: You've successfully uploaded the images, but you've now put them into a category that doesn't exist- that's why it appears in red. If the author says "Use with credit," do we infer that he or she intended a specific CC license? Image: Starry Dwarf Frog Darkfrog24 (talk) 21:34, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

@Darkfrog24: unfortunately, no, we can’t second-guess an author’s intentions without an actual licence or at least a statement of permission that explicitly covers all the requirements of COM:LIC. In this case, the site terms & conditions say “You may not reprint, reproduce, republish, or otherwise distribute content that appears on EurekAlert! in any way except for your own personal, non-commercial use, without permission from EurekAlert! and AAAS,” so I would assume that the request for attribution is a further condition, not an exemption.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:48, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

Picture has been taken away

A person, Patrik Rogel, obviously an administrator, has taken away my picture on my page. I got a message that it’s not legal, but the picture is mine and it was taken very unofficial, I have no name of the photographer. I cannot find the picture now on Wikipedia. What shall I do to get it back. It should be illegal to swipe away a picture like this so I cannot find it... Please, explain this to me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gigue52 (talk • contribs) 17:00, 12 March 2019‎ (UTC)

Hej Gigue52! LX (talk, contribs) 18:36, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

legal questions

Hello,

I am the communication manager of a Hungarian Theater name József Attila Színház. Some wiki editors are using our photos illegaly. The facts communicated about our actors are also failed. I am trying to correct these information with marking the official photogaprhers pieces and also correcting the datas. Some editors wants to return the pages to the previous facts and photos. How can I ensure that noone behave illegally and does not re-edit my correction. Please help

Just now I was trying to upload an image. There are five steps to this - Learn, Upload, Release rights, Describe, Use. So under release rights the box " Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0 (legal code)" is checked automatically and this is alright. But then on the next page under the describe section there is another box which says "License for caption contributions only. By clicking "publish", you agree to the terms of use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the Creative Commons CC0 License." I don't get this. Why the two licenses? What is the second one on the describe page for? DiplomatTesterMan (talk) 18:06, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

Hey DiplomatTesterMan. The CCBYSA 4.0 license is for the image. The CCO license is only for the text in that box, so that it can be used in some kind of complicated database thing that Wikidata is involved in (I'm not an expert in computer magic, but that's the gist of it). GMGtalk 18:25, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
GreenMeansGo, Ok. This seems simple enough to understand. I was just confused related to why would a caption need an entirely new licence but it makes sense to have seperate ones. Thanks. DiplomatTesterMan (talk) 18:28, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

I never normally use the Upload Wizard, and I normally avoid captions, so I just played with it to see how this works and it is hideous. This is the sort of thing that either drives people away or teaches them to ignore warnings, depending on their temperament.

  1. This notice which is specific to the caption should be somewhere near the caption.
  2. It should have an   info link for help that leads to an explanation of why the caption has a different licensing status than the rest of this.

Post Card of Union Station (1943)

I would like to upload a post card of Union Station, Washington DC. The post card was bought and sent by my father in 1943 while transiting the station during World War 2. It would be a nice inclusion on the Wikipedia article about Union Station, Washington DC. The post card was published by the Union News Company which went out of business in 1969. It was a subsidiary of the American News Company which went defunct in 1957. May I upload the photo from the post card to the Commons and then bring it into the article about Union Station in Washington DC. The document is now at least 75 years of age.

copyright painter deceased in 1984

I have included paintings in my wikipage of a painter that died in 1984. The paintings shown are exhibited in 1994 and 2004 on two different galleries. I have a PD copyright included, adding 'in private collection'. Isn’t the 95-year term only for works by unknown authors (or those whose date of death is unknown), counted from first publication rather than pma? I would have thought this copyright to last through 2054 / until 2055.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:16, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Either way, I'll presumably be dead before this can be uploaded under our current rules. - Jmabel ! talk 23:51, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Since I started the DR, I'll also help you. Since he was an American artist, the date of publication of his paintings is important. I noticed that a few are paintings were created pre-1924 but sandbox page for the artist notes that these were created in France. So it's important to find out if these were first shown to the public in France( which is Life+ 70 years) or in the United States (publication + 95 years if they had copyright notice). If these were never published during artist's lifetime and weren't published before 2003, copyright on them expires 70 years after the death of the artist. Uploading Scanned Images of Illustrations from Victorian-era novels

I have scanned illustrations from Victorian novels (all are pre-1908), and want to upload them to Wikimedia Commons. Is this allowed, since I did not create the illustrations myself?

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Laurenelle90 (talk • contribs) 19:27, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

@Laurenelle90: 1908 is rather late to assume the copyrights have expired unless the book was first published except in the USA (where anything published before 1924 is in the public domain). When you say “Victorian” I think of the UK, where illustrations by any artist who lived past 1948 are still usually in copyright, and for death-dates after 1925 had their USA copyrights extended by the URAA. That said, you can indeed upload works that are now free—which may take a bit of research to ascertain for each case—with an appropriate PD template.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:49, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
Works published more than 95 years ago are PD in the US, no matter when the creator died. So UK copyrights may be a concern, but US copyrights of pre-1908 books are not an issue.--Prosfilaes (talk) 13:32, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the correction, @Prosfilaes; I forgot that the 95-years-from-publication term trumps all other considerations in the USA. I’ve amended the above.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:43, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Old military images

I uploaded an image of a French vehicle that was modified by a German engineer and put into service. The engineer, Alfred Becker, took extensive photos of the work done at his fabrication shop as he was required to do so for review by Adolf Hitler. The year would have been 1943. As these images were created by someone working for the German military, I was thinking they were the property of the German military and being 76 years old and from a foreign country they were past being a copyright violation. Was that not correct? Thanks for your consideration. Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 00:27, 14 March 2019 (UTC) File:Großer Funk- und Befehlspanzer 38H(f).jpg

@Gunbirddriver2: the only German-government works that are free of copyright are laws, regulations, &c.; the USA’s putting all its government’s works into public domain is rather exceptional. AFAICT the copyright status of the photos will depend on when Becker died, and when & where they were first published; I don’t see anything special about the term of military/government copyrights at COM:Copyright rules by territory/Germany.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:57, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
Okay, thanks very much. So would it be true that a picture taken as part of the US military effort, say of a group of B-17s over Germany, that would be okay as the US government has placed such work into the public domain?
As to Becker, I do not know when he died. I know of him into late 1944 but whether he survived the war or not I do not know. I do know a German author named Spielberger used images from Becker's archive and put them in one of his books on German military equipment published in 1989. So then these old German images would need to be from the Bundesarchive or some other source that specifically placed them in the public domain to be used by us. Thanks again. Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 03:50, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
Also thanks for the link to the copyright laws for Germany. Very helpful. Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 03:53, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
@Gunbirddriver2: Where you ask about "a picture taken as part of the US military effort…": almost always, yes. The exceptions would be something like if a civilian photographer (say, someone from Life magazine) had been aboard the plane and taken the pictures. Also (not quite the case you are asking about), sometimes members of the military take photos in a capacity unrelated to their military duties, and they are allowed to keep their copyrights on those as if they were civilians. E.g. a soldier in Germany after WWII could take personal photos while on leave, and those would not automatically be in the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 15:46, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

If the media is freely licensed then you can upload it here on Wikimedia Commons, and then embed it in pages on other project. To be acceptable for the Commons, File:Huntingcampsinwo00priciala 0010.jpg must be in the public domain in the US and in its country of origin (presumably the UK, since it's taken from a book published in London). The book was published in 1910, so the US seems OK. I wonder about the UK, though. In the book, the photo comes with a kind of credit that says:

Photo]     [Newnes

I expect "Newnes" is the photographer. Wouldn't we need to know when Newnes died to determine whether the photo is PD in the UK? Huon (talk) 23:28, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Of course you're right about the US. I can find lots of references to images from this period being published by, or re-sold by, the firm of George Newnes. (Newnes Ltd was ready to publish images; they owned the Strand Magazine, in which Conan-Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories were published with famous images, e.g. File:Twis-05.jpg.) Lacking any evidence to the contrary, I believe we can comfortably assert that this was taken by an un-attributed employee of Newnes' company, making it fit under {{PD-UK-unknown}}. Wrong EXIF date

Do we have a template that can be placed on a file to say "this image has incorrect EXIF information"? This image's EXIF claims that it was taken in late May, but well-watered deciduous trees at 38°N latitude definitely don't look like this in late spring (they look much more like this July image); I suspect that the camera had been misconfigured. (Otherwise, the photo's perfectly fine, and there's no reason to object to its use at six pages on four wikis.) I've removed the date from its {{Information}} template, and I just want to prevent it from being re-added by bots or by users who are working semi-automatically. Old maps from old books

I have many books about the I World War and the Balkans Wars (1912-1913). In many cases, I know that the author died more than 70 years ago (like marshal Ferdinand Foch, who died in 1929). In this case, we know that this maps is under public domain. May I upload these photos? If the answer is "yes", how can I write this information? --Marcos Souza (talk) 14:08, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Yes, those should be public domain. Typical PD tag would be {{Licensed-PD-Art|1=PD-old-100}}. If you are using Special:Upload, you can just write the tag into the text accompanying the upload. If you are using something else, the exact way to enter license tags will vary, but at worst you can use a generic PD tag and then edit in the correct tag immediately after upload. - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
    • You should be careful though when it comes to illustrations from books. The writers such as Foch are almost never the graphical artists who actually drew the maps or took the photos to illustrate their books. Unless there are explicit credits to photographers or graphical artists and the book was published before 1924, you can use {{Licensed-PD-Art-two|1=PD-EU-anonymous|2=PD-US-expired}}. Upload product logo icons to Wikipedia or Wikimedia?

I noticed that a lot of the icons shown on Google's products on Wikipedia are unofficial, as in, they seem to be self-made.

Examples: the icon shown in the top-right corner of the Gmail article, or the Google Maps article. They look right, but I can confirm they're unofficial, as small details are incorrect or missing.

I've found all the different product icons in .svg format straight from original sources (various official Google pages), and I want to go about updating all the incorrect icons on Wikipedia. I started with the Google Keep article and uploaded the correct .svg for it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Google_Keep_icon.svg (replacing the old and slightly incorrect .png here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Google_Keep_icon.png).

When moving on to the Google Maps Wikipedia article, I found the icon was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as opposed to Wikipedia. So now I'm trying to figure out best practices on when to use which. Should I upload all the icons to Wikipedia? Or is it better to upload to Wikimedia Commons?

--CoreyVidal (talk) 14:48, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

  • If they are simple enough to be ineligible for copyright, we can host them on Commons. If they are not, then we would require a free license from Google, which is almost certainly not going to happen. - Jmabel ! talk 15:51, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
  • What about all of these existing Google product icons currently on Commons?:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gmail_Icon.svg

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GoogleMaps_logo.svg

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Google_Chrome_icon_(September_2014).svg

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Play_music_triangle.svg

Do they not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection? And are they therefore in the public domain?

--CoreyVidal (talk) 16:50, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Have you read the "Licensing" section of these files? It says there that "This image consists only of simple geometric shapes or text. It does not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection, and is therefore in the public domain." De728631 (talk) 17:50, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
  • Yep, but that doesn't mean they were done properly. I didn't trust them, as they were clearly self-made, so I didn't know if I could trust the licensing either. But if it's good to go, I'll update all of them to official sources. --CoreyVidal (talk) 18:18, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure what you mean by a "laptop gallery" distinct from the file system on your laptop, but you can probably work that out. Assuming the picture from the pyramids is a photo you took yourself, you can probably just go to Special:UploadWizard and follow the directions. If you didn't take the picture yourself, it is unlikely that you are in a position to provide the license that Commons requires. You need to be logged in to upload, though. - Jmabel ! talk 00:41, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Rasgacabeza.jpg

I decided to write the wikipedia page for a band's new album (RASGACABEZA) and I don't know how to label the album cover. Because the Wikipedia's info about photos said that most covers come from amazon, I decided to post the album cover from the Amazon website. I do not know what to categorize it under. Please let me know how to proceed as I do not have copyrights to the photo. I just want to add the album cover to the page I just created.

--ElectricChurro (talk) 05:10, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

  • @ElectricChurro: Not sure where you got that thing about Amazon; I assume from your remark some page on the English-language Wikipedia. Keep in mind: Commons is not Wikipedia. Commons never hosts files on a "fair use" basis: to be on Commons it has to be either public domain or under a free license, neither of which is likely for an album jacket.
  • For non-free use of an album jacket on the English-language Wikipedia, you probably want to use en:Template:Non-free album cover and upload directly on the English-language Wikipedia (not on Commons).
  • The Spanish-language Wikipedia, like Commons, does not allow images on a fair-use basis. See es:Wikipedia:Sobre el uso legítimo. - Jmabel ! talk 05:50, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

How publish portraits of artists and art work on Wikipedia

Can somebody please outline how to correctly publish images to Wikipedia in the following scenarios in order to avoid deletion?

Artists want me to publish images on their own Wikipedia page, and are willing to give full usage rights on Wikipedia Commons (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).

I will be uploading the images for the artists, editing their Wiki page, and conducting all interaction with Wikipedia - at the request of the artist.

1. My photograph of an artist and/or their artwork

I have taken a photograph of an artist posing with their artwork, and/or a photograph of their artwork, and the artist wants it published on their Wiki page.

I also am willing to give the same usage rights referenced above.

2. Photograph by the artist

The artist has taken a photograph of their own artwork, and wants it published to their Wiki page.

I have spent countless hours reading the Wikipedia guidance, and trying to provide the correct permissions, only to have the Wiki reviewers and bots delete the works from the artists page.

Since I am unable to figure this out, please provide exact, explicit steps for myself and the artist as needed to avoid any more deletions.

I would be eternally grateful to be delivered from this cul-de-sac. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Uranoz (talk • contribs) 20:51, 10 March 2019 (UTC) Uranoz (talk) 15:18, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

@Uranoz: about point 1: provided that their artwork is not the main subject of the photo, upload as usual and edit the file page to include {{De minimis}}. See this page for an example where the copyrighted work is described using the De minimis template. --HyperGaruda (talk) 21:04, 10 March 2019 (UTC)
@Uranoz: I've photographed quite a few artists, and from my experience with this sort of thing, usually the artist's work in the photo will be too prominent to be de minimis. It sounds like you are doing this repeatedly, so you want to get it down to a straightforward process that will leave no question about the legitimacy of this. Would it be possible to have the artists in question go through the process beginning at the URL https://tools.wmflabs.org/relgen/ ? Because if that'a a viable solution, it is definitely a good one. If that's too much for them to do, though, get back to me and I'll see if I can help you set up a process a little more customized to your purpose. - Jmabel ! talk 21:59, 10 March 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Yes, these images will not work with the minimis label, AND the artists are not capable of handling the permission wizard you reference - unless I walk them through each step. Some are in Europe and some are very elderly. I am in the US, so the best process would be one that I could handle myself. I have tried having the artist provide rights, and myself provide rights, which did not work. I am used to working in a professional environment where processes are clear. I am completely stressed by this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Uranoz (talk • contribs) 03:01, 11 March 2019 (UTC) Uranoz (talk) 15:18, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
When you say "I have tried having the artist provide rights," I presume you mean you've had them provide a license, correct? Or do you mean something else? Can you explain exactly what you've had them do? Or would you rather skip that and have me just jump to my suggestions about setting up a process? - Jmabel ! talk 04:25, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: FIRST, I appreciate this help from both yourself and HyperGaruda. SECOND, I would very much like to have a process I can follow. This would be for A - uploading photos of artists that I have taken that have that artist's artwork figured predominantly in the photo, AND B - for being the person who uploads photos taken by the artist of their own artwork. In both cases, the intent is to get these images on the Wikipedia page for the artist.

THE PROCESS I HAVE USED TO DATE IS AS FOLLOWS. I upload the photograph of the artist that I have taken of the artist to Wikipedia Commons, and assign it the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license. I do this because I took the photograph, and it is my photo. Then I have artist send an email to the Wikipedia Permissions desk using the template, providing the appropriate details, and using the license Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts). I have also tried having the artist use the Use Share Alike, Non-commercial license.

  • All of that seems appropriate except for the part about the non-commercial license. Commons requires that there be at least one license for each image allowing commercial reproduction.
  • Other than the case involving a non-commercial license, I'm really surprised if this isn't working. Are you sure the artists are sending those emails? Are they cc'ing you when they do so, so that you can be sure? Are you sure the artist is being clear as to what image or images this pertains to, (or that they are authorizing you in general to upload on their behalf)? Sorry if these questions seem at all repetitive, I'm just trying to see if we can pick out what's been going wrong.
  • For what it's worth, the requirements for your two cases are pretty much identical. Your upload with an appropriate license clearly provides the permission we need from you in case 1 and your permission is not needed in case 2. - Jmabel ! talk 16:00, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
  • @Uranoz: I've linked this discussion from Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard#Artists' works because I think we need someone with OTRS authority to look in on this. Jmabel ! talk 16:05, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
@Uranoz: Specific filenames and OTRS ticket numbers would be helpful.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:43, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: No problem, clarity is king. Yes, the artist is providing exact specific statements using the correct form to the permissions email box for Wikipedia. I have seen copies of these emails, and know the dates/timing which has been fine. My concern has always been that the two permissions would somehow be in conflict. For example, IF I provide a permission when uploading an image to the Commons (because I took the photograph) AND then the artist provides a permission because either A. they were the subject and their art is predominate in the photo, and B. the image is of their artwork. It sounds like you are saying that this is a correct and normal process, AND that ONLY one of the permissions needs to allow commercial re-use. QUESTION: is my understanding of your comments correct? I think for clarity that I will post the progress for one particular photo that I recently uploaded as a test. It was uploaded to the Commons here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:In-the-blue-light-winston-branch.jpg The artist sent a permissions email to Wikipedia on March , 2019 with a Use Share Alike, Non-commercial license. So this image has both a non-commercial and a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license. So, this should work. Since it was posted recently, and is still under review, we have no response of approval or removal request from Wikipedia, and are waiting for one of these results. The image is published to the artist's Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_Branch NEW IMAGE: I have also just uploaded a new image to the Commons here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Winston-branch-alta-bates-2011.jpg with the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license. I have published the image to Mr. Branch's Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_Branch Mr. Branch, the artist has also just sent an email to Wiki permissions with subject line License permissions for https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Winston-branch-alta-bates-2011.jpg and email content as follows: I hereby affirm that I, Winston Branch, am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Winston-branch-alta-bates-2011.jpg as used here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_Branch, and have legal authority in my capacity to release the copyright of that work.

I agree to publish the above-mentioned content under the free license: Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts). Winston Branch Copyright holder, Copyright holder of the artwork March 12, 2019

NOTE: Is this correct? It just seems ridiculous to have two - 2 - persons claiming to be holder of full copyright permissions to the same image. One is the image creator, i.e. - this is my photograph. The other is the person whose work is shown in the photograph. Shouldn't these creatives be granting permission for their work to be included in the photograph? Why isn't there a specific permission that allows artists and others to say exactly what is appropriate: I grant permission for this photograph of my work/ideas/creations to be be licensed under blah, blah, blah. This would be much more clear. Uranoz (talk) 19:05, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

  1. These things that involve two separate copyrights are among the trickiest copyright issues. If you photograph an artwork, two separate copyrights are involved: the copyright of the artwork and the copyright of your derivative work, the photograph. Only the artist (or whoever holds the copyright of the artwork if that copyright has been transferred) can give permission to reproduce the artwork. Only you as photographer can give permission to reproduce the photograph. The only time two separate copyrights wouldn't be involved are:
    1. If the artwork itself were out of copyright, in which case copyright of the artwork is irrelevant.
    2. If the artwork is two-dimensional or so close that photographing it involves no creativity, and the photograph shows only the artwork (not even a frame), in which case the photograph is not eligible for a copyright separate from that of the artwork.
So two persons are not holders of "full copyright permissions to the same image." You each own distinct rights, but both sets of rights are needed to reproduce the image.
  1. When I wrote, "Commons requires that there be at least one license for each image allowing commercial reproduction" I don't mean that only one of those two separate licenses needs to allow commercial reproduction. We need such a license for the artwork, and we need such a license for the photograph. What I meant was that we allow things to be multi-licensed, and it's OK if one of the offered licenses is limited to non-commercial use, as long as there is a license that allows commercial use.
  2. We need a lot of the "I'm aware…" language because people were misunderstanding what rights they were waiving. We need that explicit so people don't sign an irrevocable license without understanding its consequences.
  • Other than that, you seem to have understood correctly. And it looks like both licenses involved should allow commercial use, so in at least this case the misunderstanding about "non-commercial" should not be a significant issue. The only issue (not a big one, easily fixed) is that because this is a faithful reproduction of a two-dimensional work, the photograph itself would not have a copyright, so the licensing on the page should exactly match the licenses being granted by the artist {{GFDL}} and {{CC-BY-SA-3.0}}.
  • Convenience link File:In-the-blue-light-winston-branch.jpg.
  • I could go off on several related tangents, but I have to get back to my paid work. Jmabel ! talk 20:19, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thank you again, the clarifications your provided help a lot We are proceeding with these new images and will see how things work out. Uranoz (talk) 21:41, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: The solution for the images where I photographed an artist with their artwork, and the artwork was clearly visible and an integral part of the photograph, was (a) for me to upload my photograph and grant the usual Commons free license, and then (b) for the artist to sent a form to Wiki permissions, titling EACH image in the photograph, and granting a free license for the use of those images in the photograph. Here is content of the statement that should be used and mailed to permissions. Again, thank you for everyone's help!

Author autorization to upload a photo of her work

Hi everybody,

Months ago I uploaded a picture of a famous chilean actress, which was deleted because I didn't have a written permition from the author, even when I had oral permition to upload it, as the actress is my client and the photographer is a good friend of hers. Anyway, at that time, I agreed and didn't upload the file again.

My client wants to upload the picture anyway (she loves the picture and wants it for her Wikipedia page), so I need, please, for you to tell me what does the letter from the author have to include in order to accept the picture.

Thanks in advance! And sorry if this question was already answered, but I couldn't find it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by StreamXsonik (talk • contribs) 20:59, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi, people. It's likely a dumb question. But, is there a place where I can find the exact number of files I uploaded? On en.wiki I can see the exact number of articles I have created. @SirEdimon: You may use {{Speedy|(Reason)} for generic reason deletions, or {{SD|(Any codes)}}, where such codes are listed on COM:CSD. Hello

Why is Wikipedia do not support disability people when they want to work in Wikipedia? I demand a answer and a full apology from Wikipedia. --182.239.190.231 18:21, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

For starters, could you give an example of where you perceive to have been intentionally hindered? Furthermore: technically you did not post this demand on Wikipedia but on Wikimedia, which is (although related) a different project, where your one and only contribution so far was this demand - which (to me) seems like a wrong foot to start things off. Upload procedure if copyright owner and author are different but the author should be credited

I have a set of 4 photographs taken in Australia 1959 by Fritz Kos an Australien photographer that I want to upload for use in a Wikipedia article. The photographs were commissioned by our family and show the house that our family built in Perth. According to information that I received the copyright rules during that time in Australia give the copyright to the person that commissioned the work. I do want to credit the uploaded pictures to the photographer. Which procedure do I use? Own work? But there is no field to mention the author. Just to be safe I notified the heirs of Fritz Kos that I planned to publish the photographs under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license and received an OK. Based on the copyright situation above I already gave permission to publish one of the photographs in a book and this was accepted valid I understand. I also assume that our family are the only owners of the original photographs. There is of cause no documentation that proves that our family commissioned the work except the photographs themselves. Basicly what is the procedure to use if author and copyright owner are different but the author should be credited in the published work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Schmila (talk • contribs) 15:18, 24 March 2019 (UTC) --Schmila (talk) 14:52, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Tisopurine

What should be the name of the file File:Tisopurine.png which was uploaded by @Edgar181: . The user @JWBE: has been trying it to rename to Thioisopurine. Is it proper scientific name or vandalism? --✝iѵɛɳ२२४०†ลℓк †๏ мэ 16:17, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

JWBE, what is Thioisopurine? Can you provide a link to a scholarly work (journal) where this was properly described? Regards. T Cells (talk · contribs · email) 17:04, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
The given rationale for the name change, "meaningless or ambiguous name", is patently false. Tisopurine is the w:en:International Nonproprietary Name given to the chemical chemical compound for the specific purpose of being non-ambiguous. I can't find any evidence that "thioisopurine" is used by any reliable source as a synonym for this chemical compound. ChemNerd (talk) 17:44, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
There are two citations in the enWP article where the file is used; one calls the compound thiopurine and the other tisopurine. According to the infobox, the IUPAC name is 1,2-Dihydro-4H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine-4-thione; no “thioisopurine” synonym to be found in any of the chemical databases linked from there. (IMO the element symbols are oversized in the drawing, but that’s not pertinent to the name.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:58, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
Tisopurine is a unprecise trivial-name. It could have been shortened form Thioisopurine. In fact it is a "Iso"purine, due to the new position of one N-Atom. Thiopurinol is even unprecise, because it's not an alcohol. Only the IUPAC-name is in the moment precise. --JWBE (talk) 20:56, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

There used to be a handy little tool on commons that you could use to generate figures regarding the global usage of files and categories. Example: How many times do wikis use files of the category Featured Pictures, sorted by individual files etc. I know that tool must be there, somewhere. I just can't find it. ;-) Many thanks --Martin Falbisoner (talk) 11:53, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Should I replace File:Giovanni Vailati.jpg with a higher quality version located on the Italian Wikipedia (it:File:Giovanni Vailati.jpg)?

On the Italian Wikipedia there exists an image of Giovanni Vailati which is marked saying that it can't be moved to Wikimedia Commons for technical reasons, my guess is that the fact that there already exists an image on Wikimedia with that exact name is that reason. Should I replace the lower quality image on Commons with that of the higher quality Italian Wikipedia image? Of note is the fact that the image located on the Italian Wikipedia is not of the same physical photograph as that on Wikimedia Commons, for this reason would it make more sense to upload the file separately with a title such as "Giovanni Vailati 2"? The Editor's Apprentice (talk) 01:53, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

Awesome, thank! Does the Italian Wikipedia file actually meet all of the criteria to be uploaded to Commons? Once I've made the upload to Wikimedia Commons, should I propose to have the version on the Italian Wikipedia deleted? Is there some special way that I should mark that the file was originally from a Wikipedia? —The Editor's Apprentice (Talk) 05:21, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
Sure looks legit for Commons.
The Italian Wikipedia has a {{NowCommons}} template; given the difference of name, I'd put that on the file and leave it there for at least a few days before deleting.
Also certainly before removing it from the Italian Wikipedia, make sure all references to it there have been appropriately changed to the new filename. - Jmabel ! talk 15:51, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

How to get Picture which is not mine

I wanted to add some details in a wiki page "Shimadzu Company" for which i need to upload an image.

Few weeks ago a photograph i uploaded for a page i on a Kpop celeb got deleted due to copywriter issue. I had basically taken it off the web and uploaded. I was informed thats its not allowed and has to be taken off. I do not wish to repeat the same mistake.

So how can i upload a new image (i am not the owner and its available freely online) with out facing the deletion problem. Or is there a way to get someone else (who is the owner of it -- im not sure who -- upload request??) to get it on wiki.

Asikm03 (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 13:11, 27 March 2019‎ (UTC)

"copyright" not "copywriter" (the latter is also a word, but not closely related).
"Freely available online" has nothing to do with the matter. Someone does not lose copyright by publishing, however widely, nor do we gain a right to infringe their copyright because someone else did.
What you are asking is basically "how can I give away something that I don't own and someone else does"? You can't. Instead, you have two possible courses of action.
  1. Arrange an opportunity to take a picture yourself. Then it has your copyright, and you can license it as you wish.
  2. Convince the owner of the copyright to release it under a free license. See COM:OTRS for how they do this; I believe there are several other related pages and someone may be able to point you at them.
It may be that you cannot readily get a free-licensed or public domain image of the subject you want. This happens. That is why quite a few Wikipedia articles do not have pictures. - Jmabel ! talk 16:03, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
@Asikm03: First, go to the company's Wikipedia article, in this case en:Shimadzu Corp. Then, find their official website from that article's infobox or external links, in this case http://www.shimadzu.com/index.html. Then, look for the new logo or another image on that site, in the case of the logo https://www.shimadzu.com/profiles/shimadzu_corporate/themes/shimadzu_corporate/images/common/logo.png. Copy the logo or image (in case you do get authorization to upload) and URL. Then, look for licensing for the logo or image, typically at or near the bottom of the site, in this case "Copyright(C)2019 Shimadzu Corporation. All Rights Reserved". We can't accept that per COM:L. Then, find contact info, in this case the "CONTACT US" link https://www.shimadzu.com/contact/index.html. Then, find the appropriate contact form link, "Corporate Information" link https://www.shimadzu.com/form/ci/contact.html. Then, fill out the form, mentioning the logo URL and the website URL, with some language from en:WP:ERP, and submit it.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:11, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
That logo https://www.shimadzu.com/profiles/shimadzu_corporate/themes/shimadzu_corporate/images/common/logo.png looks simple enough to be {{PD-ineligible}}. - Jmabel ! talk 23:49, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

The necessary instructions are on Commons:OTRS#Declaration of consent for all enquiries. The photographer should attach the image to the e-mail. Ruslik (talk) 14:21, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
After the new image is uploaded, the article needs to be edited to replace the old image with new one. Ruslik (talk) 14:23, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
Also: within Commons, upload the picture to a new filename, just like any other picture. The old picture remains a valid part of history; then, as Ruslik0 says, you make the appropriate changes in the articles in the various Wikipedias, and perhaps on Wikidata. - Jmabel ! talk 16:07, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

convert a .tiff file

Is there a tool or method recommended to convert a .tiff file in Wikimedia Commons to a .jpg file or other file format?

Thanks, Tibet Nation (talk) 14:56, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
If you click on the different size links below the image, these are all jpeg format. The largest size will be identical in resolution to the TIFF, and you should be able to download the jpeg from your browser once you have viewed it. -- (talk) 15:34, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) @Tibet Nation: any image editor should be able to handle that. Paint.NET is a popular tool, as is GIMP. Just open the TIFF in the editor and save it as a JPEG or PNG. Even simpler, as Fæ says, every TIFF file on Wikimedia Commons generates a JPEG preview in several sizes, which you can download directly from the file page. clpo13(talk) 15:39, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
@Tibet Nation, , and Clpo13: Actually, the thumbnails here are .png, not .jpg.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:56, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
Thank you all for your helpful hints- I now can try to crop some of the high quality .tiff files. The crop tool that I enjoy using, (on the left side of the Commons page) unfortunately does not crop .tiff files. Thanks again for your time, Tibet Nation (talk) 15:41, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Uploading a picture that is in the public domain from the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division

After reading through the do's and don'ts (and becoming glassy-eyed), it's not clear to me whether a picture in the Historic American Engineering Record Collection, Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress, can be included in commons.wikimedia. From the website http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/res/114_habs.html, it says "Material in these collections is generally considered to be in the public domain." The picture I would like to upload was taken in the later 1800's.

Thanks.

Simon Hammelburg portretje

I received a message that the picture "Simon Hammelburg portretje" wil be removed because of copyright violation. I can assure you that the picture is copyright free, because Mr Hammelburg himself provided me with the picture. Mr Hammelburg can be contacted via his website: simonhammelburg.com. — Preceding unsigned comment added by P.M.A. Derks (talk • contribs) 16:57, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

file not uploading (href unsafe data)

I am trying to upload a public domain SVG file to Wikimedia Commons. The file, however, fails to upload and I receive a message indicating that the image contains a link to an unsafe website in the image's source code. The "unsafe" site does not appear to exist anymore, so I'm wondering if the code can be changed in any way, in order for it to be deemed safe enough to upload. @LizHaywood: I know it seems overly bureaucratic, but even if you're the creator of the murals and the photographs of them, you should send a permission statement to COM:OTRS. Then the pictures could be restored. clpo13(talk) 16:23, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

@LizHaywood: Assuming you are the creator of both the murals and the photographs of them, they will be restored once the OTRS process is complete, so OTRS is the one further step needed here. An alternative would be if you have a website as an artist that is clearly under your control, you can indicate there that this account is yours and acts on your behalf, thus bypassing OTRS (which is limited to only a few trusted individuals ans is backlogged by several weeks). If you go that latter route, get here of me either here or on my talk page, and I can work through the undeletion.
Either way, you won't have to redo the work you've already done. - Jmabel ! talk 21:01, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

@Donald Trung: No, that's not actually true. Just to give some widely scattered examples of exceptions (by no means an exhaustive list):
  • Use of an image may be limited by personality rights or by trademark.
  • Someone might be living in a country where certain images are not allowed (e.g. the use of certain Nazi imagery in several European countries).
  • If you are doing a photomosaic in a circumstance it is not possible to give credit to individual copyright-holders, you cannot use images that require attribution.
  • If you are creating a work for a publisher who requires overt documents to be signed by copyright-holders (e.g. indemnification and guarantee that they are the copyright-holder; quite common in print media).

How to upload photos on behalf of an amateur photographer

An acquaintance of mine wishes to contribute a dozen photos to Wikipedia page List of covered bridges in New Brunswick and to be credited as author while attributing a free license to the media. I'd like to upload on his behalf since I've uploaded a few, while he doesn't have an account. Please advise simplest procedure. --Cornellier (talk) 23:30, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

@Cornellier: He can create an account, use his normal means of reaching the public to declare permission with a COM:L compatible license, give you upload and licensing permission in writing (which you can then scan and send via OTRS), or send such permission himself via OTRS with a carbon copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:46, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
"The current backlog for tickets in English is approximately 197 days." Thanks but it looks like it'd be much easier for me to give him instructions to create his own account and upload them himself. I was trying to save him the trouble but it's less hassle than giving "permission in writing" etc. --Cornellier (talk) 00:11, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
you could also have him upload to flickr with the CC license, and then upload them here, Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 02:14, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
Like that is any easier than just uploading here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:38, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Why is my page not being pubilshed on Wikipedia? It is a government public services page, (West bengal Commission for Women) and will help millions of Women across the state of West Bengal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WBCW (talk • contribs) 09:44, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

@WBCW: Hello, you are currently on Wikimedia Commons, the free media depositary of the Wikimedia Movement. According to COM:PSS#Must be a media file, articles are not in Commons' scope, and they would be deleted on sight. Please be advised that you would also need to comply with other policies of English Wikipedia, such as Paid-contribution disclosure. A list of file names in a category

Is there any way to extract a list of file names in a category WITHOUT the pictures. Bengt Nyman (talk) 18:24, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

You can get this kind of thing out of the API. For instance, try this query in the API Sandbox. --bjh21 (talk) 18:45, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, but way over my head, I don't know where to start. Help !? Bengt Nyman (talk) 22:57, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
@Bengt Nyman: for something with a GUI you might give PetScan a try; although it reports quite a bit more than filenames, the output is in various structured formats, from which it shouldn’t be too hard to extract just the names. It can also include the contents of subcategories to a specified depth, which you might find useful.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:23, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: Thanks, could you please give my a step by step, for dummies! Bengt Nyman (talk) 14:46, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
PetScan can be tricky. But in this case, go to https://petscan.wmflabs.org/. Click the Commons link near the top. Put your category in the Categories box, I tried Ships. Go to the tab "Page properties" and unselect the Namespaces box, and select File Namespace. Then go back to the first tab and click "Do it!". For Ships, I get 342 results. If you want the output in some format like CSV, go to the output tab, select it, go back to the first tab and click "Do it!" again. --ghouston (talk) 03:26, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
@Ghouston: Thanks! I got it to work. If you want to see an example of its use go to:[8] and look at the "Slideshow". Bengt Nyman (talk) 13:09, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Copyright issues for new user

Hi all,

Some help would be appreciated, or a fix on my behalf probably even more. The following:

  • On Dutch wikipedia, an (tiny) article was placed for a center for the treatment of victims for sexual violence. It mas nominated for removal, and a number of contributors took it upon themselves to improve the article, me included.
  • My experience with Wikipedia 0ver 10 years of regular reading, about 10 years of anonymous small corrections and just over a week of active contributions. My experience with wikimedia is 'naught.'
  • In improving, I added an infobox to the article, downloaded the logo from the website and uploaded that picture to wikimedia. Added the logo to the infobox.
    1. A lot of questions (gibberish for me) about commons, licenses, copyright and stuff like that ensued while uploading, I just tried to answer questions and that was that. Knowing the non-profit website (institution) is owned by Belgium federal government & Belgium federal police I thought it would be "okay" to use it.
  • Recently, I received a notice on my user page, (triggering a notice on wikipedia,) with the message the logo may be deleted within one week. Please help / explain what I should do? Although quite fluent in English, please do understand my knowledge about licenses is naught.

Please be so kind to ping / mention me when answering here, as I am never active on wikimedia, thank you in advance. Yours truly, TaalBarbaar (talk) 07:56, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

@TaalBarbaar: , it's just copyright. You can read about it at nl:Auteursrecht. Non-profit government-owned institutions can generally hold copyrights. Commons only hosts free files, which in this case would mean a) the copyright holder has (or is willing to) release the image under a free license b) that the image isn't eligible for copyright because it's too simple. The latter is a bit tricky because it's a grey area and varies by country. --ghouston (talk) 08:06, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
Hi --ghouston, thanks for taking some time to answer. I understand what copyright is, but what should I do in this case? Will the picture only be removed if they file a complaint (which I don't see happening)? Should I send them en email? And then what? Thanks again, TaalBarbaar (talk) 08:16, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
@TaalBarbaar: , an administrator will delete the file in a week or so if it's not eligible for Commons. The organization's website doesn't seem to offer any free licenses [9]. The question would be whether the X symbol is copyrightable or not. Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Belgium doesn't say anything about "threshold of originality" in Belgium. The X appears somewhat creative, so it may be copyrightable, assuming it wasn't copied from a public domain source. --ghouston (talk) 08:28, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
Alright --ghouston, thanks for explaining what might happen. How can I find out if the Belgium government website is a public domain or not? (Please note that I'm not Belgium myself.) Thanks again, TaalBarbaar (talk) 08:52, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
There's no reason to think that the website is in the public domain. It has a copyright notice. The logo itself could be assumed to be public domain if courts in Belgium have found similar logos to be public domain. But it would be hard to establish that for sure. --ghouston (talk) 09:01, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
Uhm, --ghouston, okay, but this is _clearly_ "an official product of the Belgium government" {{PD-Belgium-exempt}} as per Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/Belgium#Copyright_tags? Note that the coordination of the project is in hands of a federal agency. (Could provide links to pdf's / public reports, but that's nl / fr, not English) TaalBarbaar (talk) 09:06, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
Interesting, but the website contains two copyright notices, so apparently they don't think they are working in the public domain. If the logo was created by an outside party, it may not be considered to be an "official product of the Belgium government". --ghouston (talk) 09:22, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

But --ghouston..., all due respect but this is a bit silly, I mean there's even a copyright notice on "https://www.belgium.be/nl" (the main portal to the belgium government) -> I think I fixed it with the public domain tag now -> File:Logo_sexueelgeweld.be.png -> Please check if I did it the right way? And if so, will the removal-tag be removed automatically? Again, thank for the time, much appreciated! TaalBarbaar (talk) 09:31, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, governments often do things that seem contradictory. I converted the deletion notice to a "normal" deletion request, which allows discussion, at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Logo sexueelgeweld.be.png. Now it won't be deleted in 7 days, but at some point an administrator will close it and either delete the file or let it stay. --ghouston (talk) 09:39, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
@Ghouston: Much appreciated!!! Case closed for the helpdesk, it seems. Thank you for your time and effort, TaalBarbaar (talk) 09:54, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
