First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Importazioni edit

O sbaglio?--Trixt (talk) 16:22, 25 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

A quanto ne so, l'unico bot che trasferisce immagini è User:Flickr upload bot.--Trixt (talk) 16:04, 28 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

File:Jessica_Tandy_1940.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

South Tyrol at Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 edit

Sorry, but I guess there is a misunderstanding. This is more or less a small initiative from the de:Portal:Südtirol. We have a couple of users there, who will create a couple of monument lists for South Tyroelan municipalities (see de:Kategorie:Liste (Baudenkmäler in Südtirol)) and upload a couple of pictures... That's it, no need for a massive project management, a permission or an authorization by a chapter, an organization plan or whatever. If the Italian chapter finally decides to participate in this contest (and I hope so!), feel free to remove South Tyrol from the list, since it may be regarded as a small subdivision. But as long as there is no final decision from the Italian chapter, please don't remove South Tyrol. We will participate anyway, no matter what the chapter says. --Mai-Sachme (talk) 12:36, 21 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Could you please show me the guideline that we need a permission by a chapter to participate? And well, I'm not a lawyer, but publishing pictures of buildings, whose architects died before 1941, is certainly not illegal (i.e. estimated 95% of all cultural heritage monuments in South Tyrol). Otherwise you should start a deletion request for the complete content of the Category:Buildings in Italy. Anyway, good luck for your collaboration with the ministry. --Mai-Sachme (talk) 12:36, 22 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Are you planning to create a project site? I'm interested to see, if you get the permission to take pictures of the still protected buildings. --Mai-Sachme (talk) 12:54, 22 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps we could think about an cooperation between WMIT and WMAT for South Tyrol WLM? Many lists will be on de.wp, so it would be a logical consequence :) Greets --AleXXw 01:02, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Mai-Sachme, sadly, I didn't look at that category, but most photos actually are illegal, because everything considered "cultural heritage" needs a permission (with a fee) to be photographed, in Italy. There are many photos on Commons because Commons doesn't care about non-copyright restrictions and users can take their risks, but still it's something which as an organisation we can't promote as far as it's against the law. The matter is, sadly, very complex. We don't have public pages about it because we're examining a lot of different ways to address the issue and we don't know how it will end. Nemo 16:48, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
AleXXw, we'd certainly love to have a cooperation! But again, I'm only the messenger here, you should talk with Aubrey and the board because they're taking care of this. Nemo 16:48, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I've closed your request and granted you the reviewer user right. Before you start reviewing, make sure to read Commons:Flickr_files. Also remember COM:FOP & COM:Flickr washing. I recommend installing the review script into your .js file with importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); - it simplifies the choices and gives you thank you text to post with your Flickr account. You can add {{User reviewer}} to your user page as well. If you ever have questions, Commons:License review is pretty thorough on the process, you can ask me, or just wait for another editor to review a questionable image. Good luck!

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Commons brochure source files edit

Hi Nemo! Here is a zip file of the InDesign source (24MB) for the Commons brochure. The Scribus version is still pending. Let me know if you have any problems with it.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 14:39, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

If Jean-Fred doesn't first, I'll probably paste in the text next week on the Commons page so that we can set it up for the translate extension. I haven't ever worked with InDesign myself (only Scribus), but I think replacing the blocks of text is going to be straightforward (if tedious) for someone who knows how to use it. And no, it's just my personal dropbox account; I just wanted to get it in a shareable form as soon as possible. If it's allowed, I'll get it onto wikimediafoundation.org as a more stable home soon; I know that we typically do that with the Scribus source files, but I'm not aware of us hosting InDesign source files (even though those are more commonly what people are looking for).--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 18:14, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've copied the text, which I think Jean-Fred will set up for translation.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 14:20, 16 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

File:Kohs_with_MyWikiBiz_screen.jpg edit

The title of the file is "Kohs_with_MyWikiBiz_screen.jpg", not "Koh's_face.jpg". The image survived Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Kohs_with_MyWikiBiz_screen.jpg. Can you please upload the cropped version onto its own file page instead of overwriting "Kohs_with_MyWikiBiz_screen.jpg"? --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 23:55, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Nope. The crop is an obvious improvement for the stated purpose (including the current usages of the file) and title, so it can't be considered a substantial change unless you think that only the repetition of the logo was the point of the image. The guideline, as I said, doesn't forbid such overwrites. --Nemo 05:32, 28 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement edit

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open! edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

A matter of Foundation templates edit

Hi, there seems to be a flurry of related edits on a certain file. I have processed the related OTRS ticket only against the information provided, and all the related reports are now licensed in the same format. This included this change. I am aware of the WMF staff template, however the OTRS ticket was a personal release. As there is some debate with regard to who paid whom, or who was under contract to whom, I suggest leaving this for the time being. Hopefully there will soon be "official" statements and it may be best to revisit the format or what templates to apply at that time.

From an OTRS and licensing perspective what has been done is sufficient. Thanks -- (talk) 09:11, 22 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

The 2013 Picture of the Year. View all results »

Dear Nemo bis,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.

Notification about possible deletion edit

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I do .djvu & .pdf source file "fix-ups" when I have the time over on en.wikisource and I run into this problem every so often on IA when attempting to [re]derive a file that I've "patched" for eventual source-file replacement upload to Commons.

Long story short... What is the best way to get folks over there to re-start the "derive" process once it craps out for any number of their "mysterious" reasons. I'm talking about

Category:Illustrations_by_work edit

Illustrations by work has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

svgo edit

does all kind of strange things our renderers, including native browser rendering cannot catch up with. I have therefore reverted File:Openstreetmap logo.svg. -- Rillke(q?) 14:11, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

The native browser rendering I had fixed with an appropriate prolog, but yes, rsvg didn't like it much. I hoped someone could fix the rendering without increasing the size (it's quite a performance drain e.g. on translatewiki.net main page) but revert is the right thing to do at this point. Thanks! --Nemo 14:24, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
That's interesting. Do you have data bout the performance drain? -- Rillke(q?) 14:44, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I noticed from stats like [1] vs. [2] (422 vs. 1019 KB downloaded). Most of it was a PediaPress logo that svgo reduced by 98 %... Just ask webpagetest to measure the main page a few times and compare results with lighter vs. those with heavier SVG logos. The 20 KB of OSM logo are not an emergency, for sure, but I don't care if someone with broken clients sees an incorrect PediaPress logo when that allows to download 400 KB less. --Nemo 15:11, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
You are using the SVG directly, of course. Maybe fork the OSM Logo. It was just that I used PNG thumbnails created from it in user scripts. -- Rillke(q?) 15:21, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, Nikerabbit made it so because usually the SVG is lighter. Sure, no big deal, I've already reuploaded locally. :-) --Nemo 15:33, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Work on its own ... edit

Hi Nemo bis, are you sure this is correct? I really can't imagine it is. Where you say "therefore," it is actually not "therefore" -- other jurisdictions also assume "that a creative photo of a painting is not plagiarism of the painting itself, but a work on its own," but it doesn't follow from that that "it's allowed for the photographer to release any sufficiently creative photo of any painting." It just regularly means there are two works, protected independently of each other -- and re-using them requires two licenses, one from either of the two right holders.

Chiarimento messaggio caricamento foto edit

Rimango in attesa e ringrazio. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Luca Venturati (talk • contribs) 15:15, 8 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Italy edit

--Ruthven (msg) 08:30, 19 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

--Ruthven (msg) 08:46, 19 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ciao --Ruthven (msg) 09:18, 19 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
See, buonanotte. L'importante è che tu abbia capito. In ogni modo, parlando di errori: [5]. --Ruthven (msg) 09:42, 19 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
--Ruthven (msg) 10:02, 19 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
--Ruthven (msg) 11:02, 19 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi edit

Hi. What is "Copyleft enforcement"? I saw one of my files there. I took that picture myself, but now am not sure with which camera or cellphone. The actual MD shows a strange date and other data. In 1971 I had not had a camera yet, and I guess there were no cellphones. (If I can calculate the shooting year well, I must have taken that pic with my mostly-used Blackberry or perhaps a primitive Nokia in which I had to find Yahoo internet page to enter into my mailbox... :) Thanks in advance for a "simple" reply for a non-IT person. --E4024 (talk) 20:40, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for pointing it out. It's just using flickrripper in a semi-automated way where I add the categories depending on the album etc. I don't think this category came from the tags. What's the best tool to show the images of a category on a map, to identify such outliers? Nemo 09:49, 14 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
I'm using geohack to map a lot of coordinates, but it often fails (especially with many coordinates): e.g. for Nature of Germany (which is alredy clean): https://tools.wmflabs.org/osm4wiki/cgi-bin/wiki/wiki-osm.pl?project=commons&l=2&usecache=0&article=Category:Nature_of_Germany --Herzi Pinki (talk) 12:13, 14 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

File:Krmaher tweet 27 Jun 2019.png edit

Hi Nemo bis, please do not put other people's work under a {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} license as you did here nor add {{WMF-staff-upload}} tags to any file which was not uploaded by WMF staff as you did here. Please open a deletion request if you think that this tweet is eligible for copyright. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 19:54, 11 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

It would be disruptive to file a DR if I don't believe the file is a copyright violation. The current template is however false. Nemo 19:58, 11 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
The current template is the only one which allows it to be kept as we have no release of its text under a free license. --AFBorchert (talk) 20:17, 11 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
The theory of the original uploader is that this tweet is relevant to Commons because the text was written in the capacity of WMF ED. The WMF ED, like every other WMF employees, signed a contract which places all their works under cc-by-sa in such cases. If the theory under which the image was uploaded is incorrect, then the image is out of scope. Nemo 20:44, 11 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Whether something is relevant to Commons or not is a question of COM:SCOPE but does not change copyright. The tweet was written using her personal Twitter account. Any assumption that anything she tweets or publishes elsewhere outside of the WMF projects magically becomes {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} has no legal ground. --AFBorchert (talk) 05:59, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sure, which is why I avoided such an assumption. Nemo 08:24, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ok but why did you then tag this file with {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}? --AFBorchert (talk) 12:00, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
I explained it above. Nemo 12:03, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
This appears to be in conflict with your statement that you avoided such an assumption as you made this assumption when you tagged that file with {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}. As explained above, private tweets by WMF employees are not magically released under a Cc-by-sa license. What the original uploader thought is irrelevant. We can just keep this file if we consider the text of the tweet to be ineligible for copyright as we have no release under a free license. --AFBorchert (talk) 13:59, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
No. I helped the uploader express in a legally correct and defensible way his conclusions about the status of one specific tweet. Out of nowhere, you talk about "assumptions" about "anything she tweets or publishes", but that's your own doing. On the other hand, you have added a much more dramatic statement about copyright eligibility of such a sentence, a precedent which can have widespread consequences on all of Wikimedia Commons. I encourage you to avoid such sweeping generalizations.
You are free to insist on your very "innovative" usage of {{PD-text}}, but please don't go around lecturing other users for copyright statements of much lesser consequence. Nemo 14:16, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sorry but I do not see anything “legally correct and defensible” in tagging that tweet {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} without having any proof for that claim. However, I believe that this tweet does not possess a minimal amount of creativity which would make it eligible for copyright. See for example this article or this one according to which most tweets remain ineligible for copyright. This tweet consists just of 89 characters and 14 words – without any originality or wittiness but just a little outburst including an expletive. This is way below anything that could be eligible according to the aforementioned articles. --AFBorchert (talk) 18:39, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
I already provided the legal basis for that tagging, I'm not going to repeat it. You link an article which talks about how "facts are not copyrightable" and then you go on talking about completely unrelated matters such as how many characters were in that tweet. Again, feel free to push this personal view (I would probably be happy if the law agreed with you) but don't claim it's anything more than that. Nemo 19:00, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

AnankeBot & cats edit

As someone who's worked extremely hard to get the numbers down on Category:Unidentified buses in the United Kingdom I'm rather angry to see the numbers go from something like 250 to now 5,347 all thanks to your bot!,
I think it's highly unfair to upload 5 thousand bus images here and then expect everyone else to do the work .... so was you going to categorise these because I can promise you now I certainly am not and no one else will either because I'm the only person who categories the images there,

I appreciate this was probably done due to the whole Flickr licence thing but still 5 thousand images is a lot and like I said I'm not sorting through that amount,
That being said if Commons/WMF were to pay me the UK minimum wage to sort through them I happily would,
Thanks. –Dave | Davey2010Talk 17:54, 23 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your categorisation work. I greatly appreciated and admired the tidy tree of categories; I seem to recall that these new files were somehow complementary to the past, in that they sometimes allow to add new categories.
I do plan to sort out at least the most obvious (and tedious) cases over the next few years when I'm in "bus mood" and I'm done with uploading my own photos. Nemo 18:12, 24 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
No worries, I apologise if I sounded rude above that certainly wasn't my intention,
Unfortunately buses and coaches can be bodied (so ie "Caetano Levante bodied Volvo B9R" or "Caetano Levante bodied Scania K EB") - Finding out the chassis (Volvo B9R, Scania K EB) etc etc etc) can only be done by searching for the number plate on Flickr,
Had it been a simple case of just "Caetano Levante" without the chassis then I would've happily done the lot but as I said to categorise buses and coaches would require Flickr numberplate searching for each and every individual image which for 5 thousand images is impossible,
Many thanks, –Dave | Davey2010Talk 19:17, 24 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia Italia

Grazie ancora e a presto,

Photos from Urho Kekkonen National Park edit

I just found your photos from the UKK Park, taken in July 2018. Thanks for them! I'd however love there to be some more information. I suppose you made a day trip along some marked route. If so, one could perhaps infer many of the locations. There are a couple of main entrances to the park along E75 (national road 4), at Saariselkä (the main resort, with the fells Kaunispää and Iisakkipää), Kakslauttanen (resort a few kilometres from E75, by Kiilopää) and Tankavaara (gold museum). There are also those at Kemihaara (Korvatunturi trail) and Nuorttijoki (circle trail down the river) in Savukoski, and near the Raja-Jooseppi border crossing in the north-east. I think I wrote them here in decreasing order of probability. --LPfi (talk) 08:48, 1 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Also if there's a way to feedback information to IA -File:Bulletin des arrêts du Tribunal de cassation (IA bulletindesarr09hait).pdf( and related uploads of the same name.) The publication dates for this vary between what's physically in the work, what IA says the date is (possibly copy-pasted or entered for a series?) and, the date given on Worldcat. It needs someone to 'up their game' in terms of the metadata being provided, so that there's ONE clear publication date instead of three. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 23:46, 22 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Template:Mibac edit

Thanks for your images of the university campus in Turku (2019). I am renaming and changing descriptions of some of them. Category:Uploads from Flickr without proper descriptions and categories edit

I noticed that your bot AnankeBot uploaded a few years ago, thousands of photos by Antonio Vera from Flickr. But without proper descriptions (about for instance subject and place), let alone good categories. The files were put in Category:Public transport. How can these photographs ever be found by others to be reused (what is the goal of Commons)? This morning I moved the majority of them to Category:Buses. Now I would like them to better categorize, but that is an impossible task because there are no clues where to. What do you have in mind to solve this problem? JopkeB (talk) 10:15, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for working on categories. These files actually have quite descriptive titles, with operator and line/bus number. The plate numbers can be extracted automatically later if necessary. This collection includes photos of many underrepresented bus operators in parts of the world where we don't have many Commons users. It can be useful when somebody needs photos from a particular bus operator or vehicle: when finding what they're looking for, they'll also be in the best position to add categories and further metadata as needed for the purpose.
In short, these photos don't really need to be proactively categorised in order to be useful, although of course that's nice if someone enjoys doing it for the sake of the puzzle. Nemo 10:39, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, User:Nemo, for your quick and clear reply. I did not see that the cryptical file names and descriptions were about bus operators and line/bus numbers. Perhaps these files could be hold together in a new category like Category:Files of buses of known operators to be categorized or something similar. Then the main category where they are now (Category:Public transport) will be less overcrowded.
But anyway, all my changes of files with buses of this morning have been reverted by a know-it-all, so I'm not going to burn my fingers on that anymore. JopkeB (talk) 17:26, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hah. That's why I'll refrain from any mass changes. ;) Don't feel bad about it, categorisation is a difficult art and we get it right iteratively. Nemo 20:55, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

What's the deal? Why do are you keep spamming DRs I've opened with the same condecending, cookie cutter keep measages? Whatever your in for the comments clearly aren't constructive and violate the assumption of good faith. So I'd appreciate it if you stopped with it already. Thanks.

Thank you!
